The nine found works that were recovered possess several characteristics in common:

• They are all painted on a tinted substrate, approximately the color of the background on this website
• With the exception of Fan-shaped Landscape and Shoreline Reflection, none have detailed backgrounds, as works produced for exhibit or trade would, but rather vague areas of color as in an artist's figure study
• They are all small
• All were in frames
• Two are painted on the reverse of an existing painting - or a section thereof
• The style and the palette strongly suggest they were all created by the same hand
• All are unsigned
• They were all found scattered among the contents of single a massive estate sale

Because these watercolors have many points in common with the work of Winslow Homer, the obvious question that arises is: if Winslow Homer didn't paint them, then who did? He took no students. Who with this level of skill would have produced such works and no others that we know about? The next page in this sequence will explore the stylistic and historical links these watercolors have that point to them having been created by Winslow Homer himself.
